Antibacterial Properties of Scallop Shell Derived Calcium Hydroxide Powders

Globally increased bivalve aquaculture production results in a vast amount of by-product discharges such as scallop shells. Utilization these wastes to produce new products antibacterial agents can cooperate reduce environmental problems and provide high value-added product at lower cost. In this study, shells are heat-treated 800°, 900°, 1000°, 1100°C for 4 hours atmospheric conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that calcium carbonate is the only inorganic phase powdered Ten weeks after thermal treatment shells, hydroxide was crystalline determined by samples calcined 1000° 1100°C. At calcination temperatures, phases were co-existing samples. Scanning electron microscopy investigations depicted using starting material synthesize nanometer-sized achieved. It applied temperature has significant effect on particle size obtained phase. Antimicrobial activity uncalcined shell powders tested against Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus.
